Keluar Baris
Boo Junfeng | Singapore | 2007 | 16 mins | PG

“Keluar baris” means “fall out” in Malay, Singapore’s national language, the last command in a parade which every boy serving compulsory military in Singapore looks forward to hearing. An 18-year-old boy returns home from his studies in Europe two days before he is enlisted into the army. This story is his personal struggle between national duties and personal liberty.

Here’s what Boo had to say on directing Daryl:

Directing Daryl was one of the most intimate experiences I’ve had with an actor. The challenge of this short – for me – was to work with a cast that was entirely non-professional. And my job was to give them situations to react to, and coerce a naturalistic performance out of them – much like the way HHH had preached.
Between an actor who ‘just can’t deliver’ and an actor who ‘tries too hard to deliver’, I’d be a lot more worried about the latter because i would feel insulted if I was the viewer. It is so easy for any aspiring actor to slip into the ‘mediacorp mode’ to conveniently bring across an emotion, because that is what we’ve been brought up to believe as ‘the way to act’. At the same time, it is also very likely that the local audience will expect a performance in that mode – and a less performative delivery could be deemed inscrutable.

Our biggest challenge was to find that right balance. Beyond being just an asset to the aesthetics of the film (which I have also undeniably exploited), he exuded a sincerity in wanting to own the character of Dave – a semi-autobiographical character that I had written. It is very interesting to notice – on hindsight – how Dave evolved as I unknowingly let go and Daryl gradually took over, and how mutual the willingness was for such a transaction and transition.

That is what I really enjoy about film directing, and the amount of post-shoot withdrawal is just a gauge of how personal and intimate that process was.
